OSSINING, NY — As the new year begins, our local officials are still busy conducting the public's business in plain sight.
John Adams famously wrote, "Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right … and a desire to know."
There are plenty of upcoming chances to help tend to our democracy close to the roots. Several public meetings are scheduled for this week in Croton and Ossining.

Two controversial projects that affect both are on the Cortlandt Planning Board agenda: plans for the Danish Home on the Cortlandt-Croton-Ossining border, and a proposal to put an addiction treatment facility at the old Hudson Institute in Croton.

Planning Board, 6 p.m. Tuesday. On the agenda:
- Application of the Gurdjieff Foundation of New York for the property of the Danish Home for the Aged, Inc. for Site Plan approval and a Special Permit for a Non-School Curriculum program use of the property located at 1065 Quaker Bridge Road East.
- Application of Bilal Ahmad, for the property of Ace/Sport Realty Holding Corp. for Site Development Plan approval and for Steep Slope, Tree Removal and Wetland Permits for a proposed 5-story, 93-room hotel for property located at 2054 East Main Street (Cortlandt Boulevard).
- PB 6-15 b. Application of Hudson Ridge Wellness Center, Inc. for Site Development Plan approval and a Special Permit for a hospital to be located at the former Hudson Institute property to provide a New York State Office of Addiction Services and Support (OASAS) certified facility to treat individuals with chemical dependency issues located at 2016 Quaker Ridge. The Hudson Institute, a conservative American think tank now based in Washington, D.C., was founded in 1961 in Croton-on-Hudson by futurist, military strategist, and systems theorist Herman Kahn.
