Hugh A. Lavery, Jr.

Former Corporate Counsel for the Village of Ossining

Hugh Aloysius Lavery, Jr., 79, died peacefully in his sleep on his beloved Marco Island, Florida on April 6, 2017 after a long and fulfilled life. Hugh was born on February 7, 1938 in Ossining, NY to Hugh, Sr. and Margaret (Keil) Lavery, the oldest of three brothers. Predeceased by his parents and his beloved wife of over 40 years, Jane Dunn, Hugh is survived by children Kathleen, Sharon and Daniel (Katherine).

Hugh graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, NY in 1956 and the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA in 1960. After graduating from Fordham Law School in 1963 he served in the Army National Guard until 1968. After being discharged Hugh was a general practice attorney in Ossining, NY for the next 35 years. He was very active in the community, serving as Corporation Counsel for the Village of Ossining, Board member of the Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Elks Lodge—where he served as Exalted Ruler in 1986.

Hugh served as lector at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. He was a fervent golfer, passionate about Democratic politics and an avid New York Jets fan. A wake will be held from 5 to 8 pm on Monday at Dorsey. A funeral mass to be held at 10 am on Tuesday at St. Ann's Church in Ossining. Interment to follow at St. Augustine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Marco Island Public Library.
