League Of Women Voters Sets Forums For Congressional Candidates

Several Republicans and Democrats are campaigning for the seat in Congress from which Nita Lowey is retiring.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — The League of Women Voters will sponsor candidate forums before the June primaries. There are about a dozen people running either as Democrats or Republicans in the 17th New York Congressional District to replace the retiring Nita Lowey.

"The League’s Candidates Forums are an important opportunity for the residents of the 17th Congressional District to hear from all the candidates in the primaries on important issues in a calm, respectful, non-partisan environment that encourages civil discourse," said White Plains LWV president and Westchester LWV executive committee member, StephenCohen in an announcement about the forums.

A Republican Candidates Forum will be held in White Plains June 2. A Democratic Candidates Forum in White Plains is scheduled for June 8. Both meetings will be held at the Church Street Elementary School from 7-9 p.m.

Also, a Democratic primary Candidates Forum will be held from 7-9 p.m. June 9 at the Ossining Public Library.

Candidates whose names appear on the official New York State Democratic or Republican
primary election ballot will be invited to participate in their respective party’s forum. In
accordance with FEC rules, a forum will be held only if there are two or more candidates on the
primary ballot.

The New York 17th Congressional District covers parts of central and northwestern Westchester
county, and all of Rockland county. Nita Lowey, who is retiring at the end of her term, has represented the district for 30 years.

Early voting in primaries is June 13-21. Primary Election Day is June 23.

The forums are a joint venture of the League of Women Voters of Westchester, the League of Women Voters of the Rivertowns, and the League of Women Voters of White Plains.
