Local Author Named finalist for National Book Award

Briarcliff's Jane F. Collen honored by prestigious Benjamin Franklin book awards for two of her three children's books.

For self-published and indie authors, getting your name out there can be a difficult task and getting a children’s book noticed can be even more daunting. For Briarcliff’s Jane F. Collen, the undertaking was well worth it. Last week, two of Mrs. Collen’s books were named finalists in the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Awards, a national organization with over 150 publishing professionals acting as judges.

Her two books, Enjella Uprooted and Storming Back to Key West, depict the life of a spunky tooth fairy who learns about sharing, magic, and friendship. Mrs. Collen’s tales evolved from the bed-time stories she once told her kids. ”For me, the story is the hook that pulls kids into the magic and power of reading.” Both books come with a glossary for expanding the vocabulary of excited new readers and her website includes printable games and worksheets for parents and teachers.

The books, which also consist of wonderfully engaging pictures, feature an educational angle that can be rare in children’s books these days. From the vocabulary in each chapter to the resonating message of “Girl Power” they strive to get kids to enjoy reading. Mrs. Collen’s #ReadingisCORE initiative focuses on the importance of ELA and reading books in schools. She believes that a love of reading can help students succeed in other classes as well.

The books each previously won silver medals from the Mom’s Choice Book Awards. A third book, aimed at younger readers, What More Can a Fairy Be? won a Gold Medal from MCA in the Fall. Mrs. Collen is planning to release her sequel to this adventure later in the year.
