Memorial Day Ceremonies and Events in Croton, Ossining and More

There are events from May 22 to May 31.

Many ceremonies and events acknowledge the service and sacrifice of the nation’s veterans and service members.

Here is a partial list of Memorial Day activities in Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester counties from May 22-31.

In addition, flags on all state government buildings will be flown at half-staff on Monday, May 25, from sunrise until noon in observance of Memorial Day. Additionally, per existing state policy, the POW-MIA flag is to be displayed over all state buildings and facilities on Memorial Day.

May 22

Cortlandt: Memorial Day Ceremony, Morabito Community Center, 1:30 p.m. Guest speaker is Raul Lopez, Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Survivor Outreach Services Program Manager, United States Army Garrison ACS.

Putnam County Joint Veterans Council: John Morris Memorial Watchfire Vigil, each night 6 PM-6AM May 22, 23,24 Opening Ceremony Friday 7:00 PM Flag retirement all night

May 23

Nyack: American Legion Post No. 310 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9215 will gather at 9 a.m. to place American flags on the graves of more than 900 veterans at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack.

May 25

Brewster: VFW Post 672 hosts Parade from Brewster Fire House to Electrozone Field (step off 10:30AM). Ceremony at Electrozone Field following parade. Light lunch to follow at post home on Peaceable Hill Road.

Briarcliff Manor: The 08th Annual Friends of the Briarcliff Manor Public Library Memorial Day 5K Run & 2 Mile Walk starts at 8:30 a.m. at Law Park.

Croton-on-Hudson: The Croton Veterans Committee will hold its ceremony at 11 am at Five Corners; in the event of inclement weather, it will be held inside the Municipal Building.

Harrison: Parade begins at 10 a.m. at Halstead Avenue.

Mahopac: Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at Clark Place and Route 6N.

New Castle: First, ceremonies at the Victory Corners Monument (King Street and Bedford Road) at 10:30 a.m. Then the parade steps off at 11 a.m. from Ridgewood Terrace at Bedford Road, proceeds along Route 117 to King Street, past the monument, down King Street and South Greeley Avenue to the Memorial Circle at the Railroad Station.

New City: Parade steps off at 10 a.m. on Collier Avenue, continues south on Main Street and ends at County Court House.

Nyack: Parade steps off at 11 a.m. on Artopee Way behind the former Helen Hayes Theater in the center of the village and continues east on Main Street, south on Broadway and then east on Depew Avenue ending at Memorial Park where a ceremony will be held at noon.

Ossining: Parade starts at 9:30 AM, stepping off at Croton Avenue and Calam Avenue and proceeding down to Nelson Park for the annual Memorial Day ceremonies. This year’s Memorial Day speaker will be the Honorable John Fried, Town Justice, Town of Ossining, United States Army Veteran, member Ossining Post 506 American Legion.

Pearl River: Parade steps off from HSBC parking lot on Middletown Road and continues south on Middletown and then west on Central Avenue ending on Braunsdorf Park. 9 a.m.-noon.

Peekskill: Captain Oliver C. Chase Jr. Post 274 hosts a ceremony starting at 10 a.m. at Monument Park. Among the speakers will be Outgoing Post Commander John H. Donohue. Refreshments follow at the American Legion Hall.

Somers: Parade will begin at 10 am with the Remembrance Ceremony immediately following at the Veterans Memorial in Ivandell Cemetery. Hosted by Somers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8213. Anyone wishing to march is asked to be at the Somers Middle School East Parking lot by 9:30am. Refreshments will be available after the ceremony at the Somers Town House courtesy of the VFW.

Yorktown Heights: Parade and ceremonies. Service at memorials at Town Hall at 11 a.m. Followed by parade at 11:15 a.m. Speeches and ceremony at John Jack DeVito Gazebo at the Yorktown Community and Cultural Center. Town Hall, 363 Underhill Ave.

May 29

Piermont: Memorial Day Watchfire will be lit at midnight and burn for 24 hours. The Pier will be open on these dates and permits are not required.

May 30

Mount Kisco: Parade steps off at 4:15 p.m., along Smith Avenue and Main Street to the memorial at the library for ceremonies honoring those fallen in the wars and featuring the winners of the elementary school essay contest, “What Memorial Day Means to Me.” In case of rain, ceremonies will be held at the American Legion building at 4 p.m.

Putnam County: Joint Veterans Council, 7 PM Traditional Memorial Day at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park. (Possible dedication of the Purple Heart Monument. )

Somers: “Operation Victory” will mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and will feature a collection of vintage military vehicles, military memorabilia, big band music, an exhibit on the impact of World War II and food served in an authentic mess tent. Guests are encouraged to dress in period clothing. $20 per vehicle; admission is free for veterans. 11 a.m.-8 p.m. May 30 and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. May 31 at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial. 914-864-7268, lasdonpark.org.
