OHS Freshmen gain exposure to college life

On October 12, Ossining High School freshmen had the opportunity to visit college campuses around the region.
The program allows 9th graders to be exposed to a college campus early in their high school career so they can gain knowledge of post-secondary opportunities after graduation.
“Part of the vision for our high school is to ensure that all students have had an opportunity to visit a college campus before they become a senior,” said OHS Principal Stephen Hancock.

While Ossining sophomores and juniors are taking the PSATs and the seniors are receiving support with college essays or working with counselors on their applications, the youngest OHS students have an opportunity to tour a college campus and talk with current students and admissions representatives.
“This unique opportunity helps our scholars achieve a high level of college and career readiness,” said Superintendent Dr. Raymond Sanchez. “By visiting different campuses and understanding the process, our freshmen can begin to develop the knowledge and skills they need to be better prepared for the future.”

The experience prompted freshman Ben Haynes to think about how important school is now, even as an underclassman.
“It was amazing—I learned that they have a great business school,” Ben said of his visit to Iona College. “It was cool because it made me realize that in 4 years, we’ll be independent in college.”
Mr. Hancock said that he is thankful to the colleges and universities who have opened their doors to OHS and hopes the opportunity will provide relevant insight for his students.
“The program enables our freshmen to get exposure to the college admission process early on so when it comes time to apply, they can make an informed decision,” he added.
