The Body & Soul Book Club at Ossining High School will host a “Day of Awareness” at the school library on May 27 featuring author Kim Purcell.
The Day of Awareness is an outgrowth of the book club’s focus on reading about and discussing meaningful issues like bullying and cyber-bullying. Students who come to the book club, make observations, comment, share stories and learn from the characters in the books they read.
The name Body & Soul was inspired by the words of Cicero who said “A room without books is alike a body without a soul.”

“We want to make some real issues come to life on this day,” said Ossining High School’s Librarian Sudha Narsipur. “This will be an all-day event with student discussions, presentations, a writing workshop and more.”
Purcell wrote the novel, Trafficked, about a young woman in Moldova who takes a job as a nanny for a family in Los Angeles and finds herself trapped like a modern-day slave. She will be on hand to discuss the book and the real-life issue of human trafficking. School psychologist Esther Sohn will present her research findings on bullying and cyber-bullying.

The day will end with a Yoga lesson from Tao Porchon-Lynch, 95, master yoga teacher. Students and teachers will have the opportunity to de-stress, and meditate with Tao at the OHS library. Yoga and meditation are known to control aggression and anger.
The writing workshop is limited to 30 participants and the yoga demonstration is limited to 50 participants, so students and teachers should register in advance. The Body & Soul Book Club meets two Wednesdays a month to discuss books on anti-bullying and to discuss issues large and small.
