UPDATE: Ossining Makes Nov. 13 Joe Burton Day
The retiring police chief is the village's 13th -- and that's not his only connection to the lucky number --
As Joe Burton explains, when he was hired he was given locker number 13. When he was issued his departmental rules and regulations, book number 13. Then he became the 13th chief. “ Also my daughter’s sports numbers were always 13,” he says.
That’s an important number in Ossining history, Burton points out: 13 was the badge number of Officer James Fagan, who was killed 75 years ago during a prison outbreak from Sing Sing. He’s one of the two officers after whom the police and court facility on Spring Street was built and named on Burton’s watch.
