Ossining Photo Students Forge Bonds with Veterans Through Art

Living History Veterans Project helps students develop artistic skills while bridging a gap between generations.

On November 16th, Ossining School District photography students participated in the 10th Annual Living History Veterans Project. In collaboration with the Robert Capa Space, this unique initiative provided students with a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with local veterans while honoring the sacrifices of our nation's heroes.

Under the guidance of Art teachers Ron Whitehead (Ossining High School) and Harry Quiroga (Anne M. Dorner Middle School), students met and interviewed local veterans and discussed their military experiences. Students then had three weeks to create an art piece depicting the veterans’ stories and present their work back to them during a touching ceremony.

It was an emotional and rewarding experience for the veterans as well as the Ossining students and teachers.

Mr. Whitehead, a veteran himself, emphasized the importance of empathy and presence, stating "It's ok to not understand, just be there and listen.”

In the process of creating art that reflects the veterans' stories, the students not only embraced the complexities of military experiences but also learned the power of just listening.

“This program continues to create a positive impact in the Ossining community with reach across multiple generations, said Mr. Quiroga. “It teaches, history in the form of art, and provides students an important lesson on compassion and selflessness.”

Ossining’s Living History Veterans Project exemplifies the profound impact of art, education, and the shared narratives of our veterans, enriching our present and inspiring a future built on appreciation and unity.
