Ossining Students Compete at First-Ever Westchester BASH Awards, held at the Jacob Burns Film Center

Go behind the scenes of the high school musical, gain an insider’s look at the Junior Semi-Formal, follow the journey of three students’ band—these are the types of stories shared in News & Noticias, a weekly bilingual news magazine produced by Ossining High School students and broadcast on YouTube.

The show is one of the contenders for the 1st Annual Westchester BASH Awards on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, NY.

While the Broadcast Alliance for Senior High (BASH) began nine years ago with a competition for high school media programs on Long Island, it has continuously expanded to include close to fifty schools in the New York metropolitan area. This year is the first time a separate competition will focus on high schools in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam.

Fifteen districts including Chappaqua, Mount Pleasant, Ossining, Peekskill, Putnam Valley, Rye Neck and Tarrytown compete for awards in fourteen categories such as Best PSA, Best Broadcast and Best Anchor Team.

Ossining High School students frequently excel at the BASH Awards, receiving accolades for PSAs, broadcasts, and overall media arts excellence. Their media production class was selected to create the promotional video for 1st Annual Westchester BASH Awards.

“Students are telling stories that matter … through film, broadcast, animation and digital storytelling,” said Kate Mathews, Director of Cultural Arts at the Ossining School District and BASH Board Member. “Bringing the BASH Awards to Westchester is an exciting way to inspire young adults in our region.”

“The Westchester BASH Awards will celebrate student-produced broadcast and digital media projects while also allowing students to learn from professionals in the media, journalism and broadcasting fields,” said David Gamberg, President of BASH.
