Ossining Students Qualify for “First in Math” Tournament

The trio won $1,000 for Claremont School, will to travel to Albany to compete in statewide competition.

Three Ossining students from Claremont School, Tyler Cong, Yugaad Mhatre, and Weston Sumba, have qualified for the highly competitive “First in Math” competition. Their exceptional performance secured a $1,000 prize for Claremont School and a trip to Albany for the in-person tournament scheduled for June 1, 2024.

These talented students have been honing their mathematical skills through the First In Math program, made possible by a grant from the New York State Education Department (NYSED). This initiative aims to enhance fact fluency, procedural fluency, and Computational Thinking skills among students.

The program utilizes innovative game-based learning technologies to provide students with instant feedback, direct instruction, and a supportive environment where making mistakes is part of the learning process. With games scaffolded from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade and beyond, the program ensures an accessible pathway to mathematical success through engaging content.

“We are immensely proud of Tyler, Yugaad, and Sumba for their outstanding achievement,” said Ferzeen Shamsi, Principal of Claremont School. “Their dedication to excellence exemplifies the spirit of Claremont School and we wish them the best of luck as they represent our district in the upcoming tournament.”

The tournament will see teams of three students from the same school and grade level collaborating on grade-appropriate challenges derived from First In Math® and the 24® Game series. To aid in their preparation, practice materials have been provided to Claremont School, allowing students to refine their skills and strategies alongside their teachers.
