Join us as we open the Fall 2014 season with the Pink Ribbons, Inc. The ubiquitous pink ribbons of breast cancer philanthropy - and the hand-in-hand marketing of brands and products associated with that philanthropy — permeate our culture, providing a sense of assurance that we are engaged in a successful battle against the disease. But who really benefits from the marketing — the cause or the company? And what is the “cause” doing with their fundraising? Pink Ribbons, Inc. takes a look at some possible causes of breast cancer and how little is still known about this disease that afflicts one in eight women. In showing the real story of breast cancer and the lives of those who fight it, Pink Ribbons, Inc. reveals the co-opting of what marketing experts have labeled a “dream cause.” Joining us as panelists for discussion are: Taylor Duffy , an Associate Program Analyst, at re-known Charity Navigator (an independent American nonprofit corporation that evaluates charities in the United States), Kristine Mattis, aPh.D. in Environmental Studies and an interdisciplinary environmental scholar with a background in Biology and Earth System Science. Kristine’s research focuses on environmental risk information and science communication; Paul Ziek, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at Pace University where he teaches a variety of public relations courses for the Department of Media, Communications and Visual Arts. His primary research interests are Corporate Social Responsibility and leadership. Our discussion hopes to cover a side of philanthropy, marketing, and science you may have never heard. Join us and let’s talk about it.
