HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Hold off on those Good Friday gardening plans. A storm coming through on Thursday will bring cold temperatures back to the Hudson Valley. Blossoms that have emerged early due to recent warmth could be damaged.

It's what's known as an Alberta clipper, a quick-moving system that's moisture-starved.

"The clipper storm has the potential to develop into a bomb cyclone as it travels from southwestern Quebec to coastal New Brunswick, Canada, from Thursday to Friday," Alex Sosnowski, an AccuWeather senior meteorologist, said. "A bomb cyclone is a storm that strengthens so rapidly that the central barometric pressure plummets 0.71 of an inch of mercury or more in 24 hours."

Thursday will start with showers and thunderstorms that will continue into the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Highs on Thursday will seem seasonal, in the middle to upper 50s. Then gusty winds behind the cold front will drop temperatures into the 30s.

The winds could be damaging, Sosnowski said.
