Roof Collapse Creates Parking Lot Sinkhole

The lot is—was—the rooftop of an abandoned building.

The collapse of an abandoned building whose roof had been a parking lot for years was first characterized as a sinkhole that opened up across from the Ossining Municipal Building last night.

Parts of North Highland Avenue and Croton Avenue were closed as emergency responders made sure the whole building wasn’t going to collapse down the hill.

Ossining’s Bravest respond to reported sinkhole incident

At approximately 10pm the OFD was dispatched to the area behind 25 Croton Ave. for a reported sinkhole. Box 1-1-1-1 companies arrived to find 4 vehicles sinking into the ground beneath them. Units remained on scene till after midnight securing the area with the assistance of Ossining Police, Ossining DPW, and officials from the Ossining Engineers Office. Areas below this on N. Highland Ave. were also secured as well.
