Senator Carlucci Celebrates 235th Anniversary of Continental Army Victory in Stony Point

Hike to Retrace Steps for Independence on the 1779 Trail in Harriman State Park

WHAT:

Senator Carlucci will lead a group of hikers on the 1779 trail in Harriman State Park. The trail retraces the steps General Wayne and his infantry took 235 years ago.

On July 16, 1779 Anthony Wayne, United States Army General of the continental army, led a successful attack on British positions at Stony Point in the Battle of Stony Point. This decisive victory was the high point of his revolutionary war service. Wayne personally led a bayonets-only night attack lasting thirty minutes.
Wayne's three columns of light infantry stormed and captured British fortifications at Stony Point, a cliffside encampment commanding the southern Hudson River.
The success of this operation provided a boost to the morale of an army which had at that time suffered a series of military defeats. The Continental Congress awarded him a medal for the victory.
