
Sister Dorothy Mulligan died on July 6, 2017 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center. She was 94 years old and had been a Maryknoll Sister for 68 years. She was born on September 30, 1922 in Yonkers, NY to Anna Sullivan Mulligan and John J. Mulligan. She was an only child and both her parents have predeceased her.
Dorothy grew up in Yonkers, NY where she attended Elizabeth Seton Academy (high school) and graduated in 1940. She earned three college degrees: a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, NY in 1944; a Masters of Arts Degree in History from Columbia University in New York, NY in 1948 and a Ph.D.in Social Sciences at the University of Santo Tomas, in the Philippines in 1953. She also attended Post-Doctoral Courses at Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines) in 1957; Columbia University in 1964 and Maryknoll School of Theology in 1978.
On September 6, 1948, Dorothy entered the Maryknoll Sisters Congregation from Sacred Heart Parish in Yonkers, NY.

She made her first Profession of Vows on March 7, 1951 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center. Sister Dorothy then received her first overseas assignment to the Philippines where she taught at Maryknoll College in Manila from 1951 – 1961. While on mission in the Philippines, she made her Final Profession of Vows on March 7, 1954. In 1963, she returned to the U.S. and was assigned as Assistant Novice Mistress at the Maryknoll Sisters Novitiate in Valley Park, Missouri.
Sister Dorothy then returned to the Maryknoll Sisters Center and worked at Mary Rogers College: in the registrar’s office and as Instructor of Social Sciences from 1963 – 1973. She did congregational service in the Research and Planning Department from 1973 – 1975 and became a council member at the Maryknoll Sisters Center from 1975-1979.

In 1979, Sister Dorothy returned to the Philippines to teach at Notre Dame University in Cotobato, Mindanao. There, until 1994, she served as Director of their doctoral program, Chairperson of the Religious Education Department and Director of the university library.
Sister Dorothy retired from Notre Dame University in 1995 and returned to live in Manila, Philippines. In 1998, she retired at the Maryknoll Sisters Center in New York where she remained active in volunteer work for many years.
A Vespers service will be held for Sister Dorothy at 4:15 p.m. in the Main Chapel on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center.
A funeral Mass will follow on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. also in the Main Chapel at the Center. Dorsey Funeral Home, Inc. in Ossining handled the funeral arrangements.
