Storm Affects HV Morning Commute, Cancellations, Openings

The winter storm warning for Dutchess and Ulster counties has been extended to 7 p.m.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The storm over the region is causing poor travel conditions and local governments are causing cancellations, closings and delays. Here's the latest plus an update from the National Weather Service, which has extended its winter storm warning for the mid-Hudson until 7 p.m. Friday.

Bee-Line buses and ParaTransit delayed the start of service. Due to hazardous road conditions the following routes are on detour. Please allow extra time for travel; buses are running with approximately 20 minute delays.

  • Route 13 Westbound detour – from Route 9/S. Highland Av - continue straight-LT Broad St – RT Spring St – back to regular route.
  • Route 15 Northbound detour – from Route 202/Crompound Rd - RT Baron De Hirsh Rd - RT Townsend Rd - LT Lexington Ave-Back to regular route.
  • Route 15 Southbound detour - from Lexington Ave - RT Townsend Ave – LT Baron De Hirsh Rd - LT Route 22/Crompound Rd - Back to regular route.
  • Route 16 is on detour with no service to Strawberry Road.

Treacherous travel conditions will continue through the morning commute, and will affect Interstates 87 and 84.

A crash at 7:16 a.m. blocked left and center lanes on I-287 - Cross Westchester Expwy westbound before Exit 9 (I-287) - Hutchinson River Parkway.

Westchester County Police reported most parkways open as of 7 a.m. but with a mix of rain and sleet causing ice conditions. The Saw Mill River Parkway is partially closed with a car off the roadway at Elmsford hill. So far, six accidents, one with injuries, and two disabled vehicles were reported.

State DOT, County DPW as well as local Highway and DPW departments are out sanding the roadways, police said.

NY511 reports numerous incidents at 6:45 a.m. including the closure of Route 218 due to weather.

Mount Pleasant Town Hall and Town offices will have a delayed opening of 10:30 a.m.

In Croton-on-Hudson, all offices at the Municipal Building will delay opening until 11 a.m.

Hastings-on-Hudson cancelled recycling pickup. Offices will open at 10:30 a.m.

Pleasantville village offices will open today at 10 am due to the weather conditions.

Yorktown town offices will open at 10 a.m.

Covid-19 testing and vaccination clinics at the Westchester County Center have been cancelled for today.

As predicted, the storm's track and the warm air are making a difference in where and when the storm drops snow or sleet or rain. The National Weather Service as of 3:47 a.m. revised the accumulation predictions.

  • Southern Westchester: Combined snow and sleet accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of one tenth to two tenths of an inch.
  • Orange, Putnam, Rockland, northern Westchester: Combined snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 4 inches and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch.
  • Dutchess and Ulster: Heavy mixed precipitation. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 4 inches in the southern parts of Ulster, Dutchess and Litchfield Counties, with 4 to 7 inches in northern portions of those counties. Ice accumulations of a light glaze to a tenth of an inch. Snow will continue to mix with then change to sleet by mid morning, with a brief period of freezing rain possible late this morning. Mixed precipitation may change back to snow in the afternoon before ending.
