Croton-Harmon boys get big win

It's a good sign when your team can produce in big games between local schools and that was the case for the Tigers in its boys basketball contest against visiting Briarcliff Jan. 12.

Led by Ian Thom's 20 points, the Tigers defeated the Bears 75-66.

Ossining-Irvington girls hoops

It's been a spectacular year so far for the Ossining girls basketball team and it continued against Irvington, led by superstar Saniya Chong.

Chong scored a game-high 55 points in leading Ossining to a 93-65 triumph in front of an SRO crowd at Irvington High School Jan. 15.

Leading the way for Irvington was Marley Giddins with 29 points.

Piazza, Sheffield Headline Westchester County Autograph Show

JP’s Sports and Rock Solid Promotions Inc. are putting on a sports card and memorabilia show at the Westchester County Center in White Plains this weekend.

The “Winter Extravaganza” is expected to have 300 tables and 150 booths of local dealers from across the tri state area.

The show will be open Friday from 2 – 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $7 per day and children under 12 are free. If you go to the show over the weekend admission entitles you to one free autograph ticket for a former Met Southpaw. On Saturday the free ticket is for Al Jackson and on Sunday the ticket is good for one Jon Matlack signature.

Appearing in person on Saturday:

Mike Piazza - Saturday from Noon to 2 p.m.

Piazza played 16 years in the major leagues for five different clubs including seven and a half seasons with the New York Mets. The former catcher finished his career with 427 home runs, a .308 batting average, and he went to the all star game 12 times.

Choo Choo Coleman – Saturday from Noon to 2 p.m.

Coleman was one of the original Mets in 1962 and he played in 55 games that season for New York. This Saturday will be his first show appearance.

Jay Hook- Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Hook was one of the original New York Mets in 1962 and he got the first ever win in the team’s history on Apr. 23 1962.

John Franco – Saturday 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Franco is considered one of the greatest relief pitchers of all time. The Southpaw spent 21 years in the big leagues including 14 years in Queens with the Mets. Franco finished his career with 424 saves, two reliever of the year awards, and four all star appearances.

Jerry Koosman – Saturday 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

In 19 years in the big leagues Koosman won 222 games and finished his career with an earned run average of 3.36. In 12 years with the Mets Koosman won 140 games including 17 in 1969.

Al Jackson – Saturday 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Jackson spent time with the Mets during their inaugural season in 1962 and their championship run in 1969. The Southpaw had a career record of 99-67.

Doug Harvey – Saturday Noon to 2 p.m.

Harvey was elected to the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown in 2010 and during his 30 year career as National League Umpire he called over 4,600 games including six all star games and five World Series.

Appearing in person on Sunday:

Mason Williams – Sunday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Williams is largely regarded as the best prospect in the Yankee farm system. The outfielder was selected in the forth round of the 2010 draft and in 317 plate appearances the 20 year old has three home runs and a batting average of .341.

Joe Panik – Sunday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In 2011 the San Francisco Giants made Joe Panik of St. John’s and Hopewell Junction the 29^thselection in the amateur draft. The shortstop hit .341 in A-ball last season with 54 runs batted in 69 games.

Jon Matlack – Sunday Noon to 2 p.m.

Matlack won the National League’s rookie of the year in 1972 for the Mets, the Southpaw also made the all star game for three consecutive years and he won the 1975 all star game MVP award.

Rich “Goose” Gossage – Sunday Noon to 2 p.m.

Gossage spent 22 seasons in the majors including seven in the Bronx Zoo. The nine time all star was named the AL’s best relief pitcher during the Yankees championship season of 1978. Goosage was elected into the baseball hall of fame in 2008.

Gary Sheffield – Sunday Noon to 2 p.m.

Sheffield amassed 509 home runs in his 22 year career that saw him play three years in the Bronx and one in Queens. The nine time all star finished in the top three of MVP voting three times and he won the World Series with the Marlins in 1997 and the batting title in 1992 with the Padres.
