Visitation, Service for The ​Rev. John Daniel Fullerton

The Rev. John Daniel “Dan” Fullerton died on Friday June 22, 2018 at the age of 78. Beloved husband of Elizabeth Duna of Ossining, NY; loving father of John Daniel (husband of Traci) of Nebraska, David Fullerton (husband of Michelle) of Kansas, Scott Fullerton (husband of Stacie) of Kansas from his marriage with Kay; loving son of Howard Fullerton Sr. (deceased) and Jeannette Heimbaugh (deceased); brother of Howard N Fullerton (deceased), William Fullerton (deceased) and Jeannette Cleaver of Nebraska. His grandchildren are Mark, Isabel, Steven, Riley, Logan, and Cooper. Dan loved them all.

Dan was born in Urbana, Illinois. He grew up with his teacher parents on the family farm with its 4000 chickens. He graduated from Sparta High School. Dan received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Illinois. Being in the ROTC program in college, he spent four years as a Lieutenant in the Navy. His most exciting assignment was commanding a ship off the shore of Cuba during the Cuban missile crisis.

In 1969, he received a Masters of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. Dan served Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations in Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Alaska, and, most recently, the Presbyterian Church in Ossining. Dan’s most challenging and satisfying assignment was to start and develop a new church in Omaha. That church, Faithful Shepherd Presbyterian Church, thrives today with his sister Jeannette as a member.

In 2007, Dan traveled to Sitka, Alaska and Sheldon Jackson College to explore teaching philosophy in this Presbyterian-related college that supports Alaska’s native population. There he met a volunteer math professor named Duna. They married and during the next 10 years traveled extensively. With Duna, he had many great adventures and performed volunteer services in Alaska, New Orleans, India, Scotland's
Iona Island, Stony Point Conference Center in Stony Point, NY, and, of course, in Ossining, where he supported efforts for affordable housing and refugee resettlement, and worked tirelessly for peace, justice and unity. His record includes being arrested while rallying to close the aging Indian Point Nuclear Plant.

For the past two years, he spent Friday evenings with an energetic group of teenagers in Peekskill called God’s
Disciples XGeneration (GDX). He grew to love those young folk.

Dan was a man of integrity. He will be remembered as a thoughtful, calm and calming presence. Shortly before he died of cancer, he was asked what he talked to God about. His answer was, “I thank God for the long and beautiful life I have had.” We rejoice in all the lives that were made more beautiful by this man of God.

Friends are invited to visit with the family on Saturday, July 7 at 10:00 am followed by the memorial service at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of Ossining, 34 South Highland Avenue, Ossining, NY. A luncheon will follow the service. Donations can be made in Dan’s memory to GDX. Checks can be made
out to GDX and sent to Ossining Presbyterian Church.
