Wind Advisories New Year's Day For The Hudson Valley

It's in effect for nine hours.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Wind advisories are in effect for much of the Hudson Valley New Year's Day, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties, the National Weather Service said:

* WINDS...West 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Isolated gusts to 55 mph possible this morning.
* TIMING...Strongest winds between 8 am and 1 pm.
* IMPACTS...Strong winds may blow down trees, large branches and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected.

For Dutchess and Ulster, the advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. The NWS said:

* Winds...West 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.
* Timing...This morning into the afternoon.
* Impacts...Strong winds may knock down large tree limbs and a few trees as well. Isolated power outages are possible.

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph are expected, with gusts between 46 to 57 mph. Winds this strong are capable of downing small tree limbs and branches, possibly causing isolated power outages. Driving can also be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
