Wobble Already a Winner: Ossining Cafe Owner in Finals of General Mills Recipe Contest

Cajun brunch dish from funky eatery scores in Neighborhood to Nation Contest

Already a winner—a $10,000 check will be presented Wednesday—Beylka Krupp of the Wobble Cafe is in the running for a $40,000 grand prize and a check to give to charity.

She’s a finalist in the General Mills Neighborhood to Nation™ Recipe Contest, which called on independent family or neighborhood restaurants nationwide to submit recipes that reflect their local flavor for the chance to put their signature dishes in the national spotlight.

Wobble Cafe is one of three finalists nationwide who will travel to General Mills in March to find out if they are the Grand Prize winner who will get $40,000 and another $10,000 to give to a local charity. The two runners-up will receive $10,000.

That signature dish? Krupp’s shrimp etouffe, which forms part of the cafe’s rotating brunch/lunch/dinner menu.

The Wobble Cafe, owned and operated by Krupp and her husband Rich Foshay, opened at 21 Campwoods Road 10 years ago. It immediately drew attention for its funky decor, kids’ play space and amazing breakfasts (try the breakfast strudel—puff pastry around eggs, onion, peppers, tomato and cheddar plus a choice of meat for non-vegetarians). Family-friendly and instantly embedded in the community, they have hosted the neighborhood ‘Coffee with a Cop’ events, and donated time, space, food and gingerbread houses to many groups. They run the downstairs cafe at the “new” Ossining Library.

Krupp told the contest people at General Mills that it was her work in New Orleans that inspired the etouffe recipe. In addition to shrimp, less intimidating than crawfish, the recipe also features chunks of tomato and onion, cream, Cajun spice and herbs, dished up with rice and cornbread.

“We have served this as a dinner and a brunch item and always receive rave reviews,” she told them. “There are customers who ask that we let them know when we will be serving it so they can be sure to come that day/weekend.”

General Mills Foodservice will visit the Wobble Café March 4 to acknowledge Krupp as a finalist in the contest and present her with the $10,000 check.

Local residents from the Ossining community are invited to join owners Krupp, Foshay and the restaurant’s staff at 4 p.m. for the celebration. Guests will be treated to samples of her winning recipe: Shrimp Etouffe, and there will be some fun giveaway items.
