OYSTER BAY-EAST NORWICH, NY — Students at James H. Vernon Elementary School were in awe during the acrobatic performance that Li Liu brought to the stage on Monday.
The former performer with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus captivated the audience with a display of strength, balance, and precision. Along with demonstrating her acrobatic skills, she shared insights into Chinese language, geography, and cultural traditions.
Her routine featured hand-balancing, plate spinning, ribbon dancing, and the diabolo — a fast-moving juggling prop. Several students were even invited onstage to try spinning plates and practice ribbon movements of their own.
She began training in China at just six years old and entered the Chinese National Circus School in Beijing a year later. She remained there until age 16, honing her craft under the guidance of her father, who coached both her and her sister as they performed together.
Over the years, Liu has appeared with the Liaoning Acrobatic Arts Troupe, Circus Knie, and Zirkus Krone, and has performed around the world. Her experience also includes appearances with Princess Cruise Lines and during NBA halftime shows.
Originally from Shenyang, China, Liu moved to the United States in 2000 and continues to share her artistry with audiences of all ages.
