BAYVILLE, NY — Locust Valley students headed to the beach, but they weren't there to swim or soak up the sun.
Instead, 31 students spent the day at Stehli Beach in Bayville rolling up their sleeves for a shoreline cleanup and hands-on environmental research project.
Assisted by teacher Donna Fredericks and Friends of the Bay program coordinator Marianna Eades, the students collected 25 pounds of trash from the North Shore beach.
The group also tested water quality using chemical indicator kits and measured air quality with a multipurpose digital sensor.
Students put their science skills to work by practicing ecology fieldwork techniques used to study the distribution of species along the rocky intertidal zone.
