• Long Island researchers are learning how to bring back oyster populations to Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor (longislandpress.com) — Researchers working with the Town of Oyster Bay are testing ways to restore the bay's once-booming oyster population, which has plunged from 30,000 bushels in the 1990s to just 51. Local volunteers are "oyster gardening," universities are tracking young oysters on the tides, and new spawner sanctuaries are being mapped out to naturally reseed Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor.
   

• North Shore cable project raises underwater concerns (newsday.com) — A major undersea cable proposal through Hempstead Harbor and nearby waterways is drawing pushback over shellfish losses, navigation limits, and risks to a key gas pipeline, with the Town of Oyster Bay represented on the harbor protection committee opposing the plan. Environmental groups, local officials, and businesses are pressing for stronger safeguards as state regulators and the U.S. Army Corps weigh permits.
