Children Escape School Bus Fire in Hicksville

The driver got the kids off the bus before it caught fire Wednesday, police said.

Seven school children and two adults were able to safely get off a mini school bus before the vehicle caught fire in Hicksville on Wednesday morning, police said.

The school bus driver noticed the vehicle’s engine was smoking and evacuated the children and an aide off the bus before the fire occurred on 2nd Street at 9:16 a.m., police said.

Hicksville Fire Department responded to the scene to put out the fire. Chief of Department Frank M. McGeough told Patch the incident was a “fully involved small bus fire” and the fire also expanded to a nearby fence.

Another bus arrived to the scene to take the kids to school, police said.

Newsday said the children were students of Carousel Day School in Hicksville.
