Flags For Freedom Ceremony Celebrates Oyster Bay Graduates, America's 250th

Veterans presented graduating students with American flags during a Flag Day celebration.

OYSTER BAY, NY — Oyster Bay High School's graduating Class of 2026 took part in a Flags for Freedom ceremony in June, commemorating Flag Day and celebrating the nation's 250th anniversary.

The event featured U.S. Navy Master Chief Keith Gunsel as the guest of honor and included participation from veterans of Gus Scutari VFW Post 6394 in Syosset.

During the ceremony, Gunsel shared reflections on his military service and offered words of encouragement to students as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives.

The program also included a flag-folding demonstration and a performance of "America the Beautiful," highlighting the significance of Flag Day and the sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces.

As part of the ceremony, veterans from the VFW Post 6394 presented each graduating senior with an American flag and messages of support for their future endeavors.

Organizers said the event served as a tribute to military service while encouraging students to reflect on their role in shaping the nation's future as America approaches its 250th anniversary.

"It was a meaningful reminder that the next generation now carries forward the American story," VFW Post 6394 said.
