Man Charged in $10K Student Loan Scam

A Hempstead man faces grand larceny charges after police say he lied about getting a college loan for an Oyster Bay student and then harassed her.

Nassau County Police arrested Shawn Terrel Boone, 24 of Hempstead, in connection with an apparent scam he had orchestrated to take money from a Nassau Community College student.

Police reported that Boone approached the 18-year-old student on the NCC campus on Sept. 11 and told her she was eligible for a $10,000 student loan that she would not have to pay back. Boone allegedly said he was a business accountant and that in order to receive the loan, he would need her bank card and pin number, which the victim gave him.

Days after the incident, police said the victim's bank notified her of a fraudulent deposit and withdrawal of over $900.

Boone called the victim on Friday and said his people would be coming to her home for more money, making her fear for her safety, said cops. On Monday, Boone contacted her again saying he would be coming to her home, reported police. When he arrived at her Oyster Bay home, officers arrested him.

Detectives said Boone had another credit card in his possession that belonged to a 31-year-old Hempstead man.

Boone is charged with fourth degree grand larceny, fourth degree criminal possession, and second degree aggravated harrassment. He will be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
