Muttontown Mayor, Doctor Husband Failed To File Tax Returns For 5 Years: DA

The couple earned a combined income of $4.5 million during that five-year span, the DA said.

The mayor of Muttontown and her doctor husband were arrested for failing to file tax returns for five years despite earning a combined income in excess of $4.5 million during that time, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced Thursday.

Julianne Beckerman, 48, and Adam Beckerman, 55, both of Muttontown, were arraigned Thursday for second-degree criminal tax fraud, two counts of third-degree tax fraud, fourth-degree criminal tax fraud and three counts of repeated failure to file personal income and earning taxes.

If convicted, they face a maximum of five to 15 years in prison, the DA says.

“While nobody likes taxes, we are obligated to file them and pay our fair share, so it’s especially disturbing that a doctor and an elected official allegedly failed to file tax their taxes for five years,” Singas said in a press release.

According to the DA, an investigation revealed that Julianne Beckerman and Adam Beckerman, who works as a gastroenterologist with a practice in Seaford, failed to file New York State personal tax returns for years 2010 through 2014, causing them to owe $243,865 in taxes.

The joint investigation was conducted by the NCDA and the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance.

“When taxpayers, especially elected officials who are supposed to lead by example, fail to pay their fair share of taxes, it hurts all honest New Yorkers by forcing them to shell out more of their hard-earned money to cover the difference,” said Nonie Manion, NYS Department of Taxation and Finance acting commissioner.

Julianne Beckerman and Adam Beckerman were released on their own recognizance and have surrendered their passports. They are due back in court on May 30.
