Toddler's Funeral to be Private Ceremony

The family of the toddler who died after a detached fence fell on him Monday will be holding a private funeral Friday. Nick Amico, father of 18-month-old Philip Amico, declined to speak about his son but said close friends and family would be invited to mourn the loss of his son who died Tuesday.

Philip Amico was playing at Ransom Beach Monday evening when a chain link fence that was leaning against a wall fell on him.

Detectives and Town of Oyster Bay employees are continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the accident. Chris Murphy, a TOBAY employee, told Newsday that he had "propped up the fence along a bath house wall two weeks ago for the fence company to pick up."

"I didn't think it was dangerous," he said in the report. "The way it was, I didn't think [something like that] would ever happen."

What happened is what called a freak accident.

"He had a huge gash on the front of his head and in the back," she said. "He had a pulse but he was completely unconscious."

The toddler was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment, but passed away at 4:02 a.m. Tuesday.

Police took part of the fence to analyze. No further information is available surrounding the investigation.
