Two Dead After SUV Slams Into Disabled Vehicle on Long Island Expressway

A 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were thrown over the median by the impact of the crash Monday night, police say.

OLD WESTBURY, NY - Two people who got out of a disabled vehicle on the Long Island Expressway Monday night were killed when an SUV struck the broken down car, Nassau Police said.

According to authorities, a 2004 BMW occupied by four people was traveling westbound in the HOV lane of the LIE when it became disabled between exits 40 and 39 in Old Westbury at about 11 p.m.

The driver, a 20-year-old man, and a passenger, an 18-year-old woman, exited the vehicle when a 2016 GMC Yukon struck the BMW, causing the two people outside the car to be thrown over the median into the eastbound lanes, police say.

The 20-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and the 18-year-old woman was pronounced dead at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. The passengers inside the BMW, an 18-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man, were transported to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries and the driver of the GMC, a 33-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.

The names of the two people who were killed are being withheld pending family notification, police said. Police did not identify the GMC's driver, but no criminal charges are expected to be filed.

A similar crash occurred in early April on the LIE. One of the two drivers who fatally struck a man who exited his car faces manslaughter charges.
