Mezzanine Of 7th Ave F/G Station To Permanently Close, MTA Says

The mezzanine between the Eighth and Seventh avenues entrances will permanently close as part of a project to add more turnstiles.

PARK SLOPE, NY — The mezzanine between the Seventh and Eighth avenues entrances to the F and G subways will permanently close next week as part of a $400,000 renovation project to the station, the MTA said.

The agency will shutter the mezzanine — which could be accessed without a MetroCard swipe — on Jan. 23 and move the station agent booth to the Seventh Avenue entrance instead as part of the project aimed to make it easier to get onto the platform.

"This mezzanine closure is part of a project to allow for faster and easier access to the platform level by relocating the station agent booth from the center of the station to the Seventh Avenue side of the station, and adding new additional turnstiles to both the Seventh and Eighth Avenue sides of the station," MTA spokesman Shams Tarek said in a statement.

The renovations started in 2016 and removed four roundabout turnstiles at entranced to replace them with waist-level high ones instead. The new turnstiles make it quicker to get into the station with larger bags and quicker to get onto the platform, Tarek said.

Some straphangers took to social media the mourn the upcoming loss of the mezzanine.

"I'll miss it a lot when it's pouring rain outside," Twitter user Alastair Coote wrote.

Residents previously called to install new elevators at the stations instead of turnstiles, but the MTA rejected the proposal because it would cost $15 million, DNAinfo reported.
