Brooklyn's Union Street Bridge To Close For Repairs
The Gowanus Canal bridge will be closed for the weekend so the Department of Transportation can make repairs.

GOWANUS, BROOKLYN — The more than 100-year-old bridge that runs over the Gowanus Canal on Union Street will be closed for several days so the Department of Transportation can make repairs.
The Union Street Bridge will close to cars at 10 p.m. on Thursday and open back up on Monday, July 13, at 10 a.m., according to the department.
The sidewalk on the bridge will stay open throughout the work.

Drivers should take a detour up Bond Street and across Baltic Street during the repairs, according to the department.
Repairs to the Union Street Bridge over the Gowanus Canal will require full closure to vehicle traffic from 7/9 at 10PM to 7/13 at 10AM. The bridge sidewalk will remain open throughout the duration of this work. Drivers should take Baltic St. pic.twitter.com/x49U1ipJqf

Officials have been discussing repairs to the bridge for several years.

It is one of five bridges that run over the Gowanus Canal's 1.8-mile stretch.
The Union Street bridge was built in 1905 and was most recently damaged badly during Superstorm Sandy when seawater swamped its motors, according to a DOT presentation.
