Saturday, September 12th, join Brooklyn Contra for a barn dance, welcoming new participants into New York's most approachable social dance! Join us for live music from the stompy, exciting, fun, and funky trio of Cojioro! All dances are taught and called!
Contra is the perfect social dance to get new dancers started, with a 30-minute free lesson all you need to enjoy the next three hours of dancing.
Contra is an easy-to-learn folk dance (similar to square dancing with some swing dance flair) that comes with a free lesson and amazing live tunes! Originating in northern Appalachia based on English and French formal dances, contra is now danced around the country by multi-generational communities. Bringing a partner isn't necessary as folks switch partners between each dance.

On the night of his awakening, the Buddha went through a series of transformational stages, one of which was the spontaneous recollection of past lives. While for him this was a mark of accomplishment, a siddhi, later these stories of past lives were used by the Buddha and others as instructional fables for those on the path. Their engaging quality spawned a whole genre of South Asian literature, the beloved jataka tales. Jatakas were important to early Buddhists and a separate class of oral reciters (jataka-bhanaka) preserved their transmission.&nbsp;For us, they provide an engaging and intuitive way to grasp important points of Buddhist ethics, outlook, and practice.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York will celebrate America at 250 with a toast to Jay Medal honorees Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed, the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and award-winning Lincoln historian Harold Holzer.
The Jay Medal for Service was created in 2012 to recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless spirit of commitment to and engagement with their community mirroring the multifaceted contributions of John Jay and his descendants. These honorees have demonstrated through their life's work that our shared narratives as a country, complicated as they are, can be better illuminated through the highest caliber of ongoing scholarship and advocacy. Honorees are selected for their excellence in the fields of American history, environmental stewardship, social justice or civic engagement.
Joining the celebration will be Chief Judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, Honorable Rowan D. Wilson and historian and philanthropist Elihu Rose who will present the awards at JHC's annual Soirée. Special guests will include David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman, and Beverly Gage.

The Jay Medal Soirée will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Jay Estate from 5:30-9:30pm. Cocktails, dinner, award ceremony and dancing. Cocktail Attire.
