Although the weather is getting warmer, water temperatures in the northeast are still quite chilly. When the water is cold and you still want to surf, make sure you have a good wetsuit! Below is a rough (and by no means comprehensive) guide to water temperatures and appropriate wetsuit thicknesses – remember, everyone is different and there are many variables that factor in to being comfortable when in cold water. Make sure to research local conditions and cold-water safety before heading out. Stay warm and have fun!
70+ degrees – 1-2mm wetsuit top
65-70 degrees – 2mm spring suit
60-65 degrees - 3/2mm full suit
55-60 degrees - 4/3mm full suit, 3mm booties
45-55 degrees - 5/4mm hooded full suit, 3mm gloves, 5mm booties
45 and under - 6/5mm hooded full suit, 5mm gloves, 7mm booties
