ConEd Asks 100K Brooklynites To Cut Back On AC Amid Heat Wave

Residents in Park Slope, Carroll Gardens and other neighborhoods are asked not to do laundry, use the microwave or overdo AC during repairs.

BROOKLYN, NY — Nearly 100,000 families in Brooklyn are being asked not to do their laundry, use their microwave or overdo it on the air conditioning as Con Edison makes repairs in the area.

The power company sent out a notice Thursday asking 96,600 customers in an area of west Brooklyn to conserve energy while they reduce voltage in the area to make repairs to equipment, according to a release from Con Edison.

“Right now there is a problem with some of the equipment in southern Brooklyn,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said about the situation during a press conference. “If you live in those neighborhood, your electric supply is in danger right now."

That means it will include customers in Carroll Gardens, Park Slope, Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Borough Park.

Customers in Windsor Terrace, Kensington, Borough Park, Flatbush, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst might also be affected, the company said.

Customers in those areas are asked not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, and microwaves until crews complete repairs. The company also asks customers to limit unnecessary use of air conditioning.

"If you have two air conditioners, use only one and set it to the highest comfortable temperature," ConEd said.
