BROOKLYN, NY — Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing for his wife, First Lady Chirlane McCray, to become the next Brooklyn Borough president, according to reports.

De Blasio has been tempting incumbent Eric Adams, who may be preparing for a mayoral run in 2021, with a political endorsement in exchange for political support for McCray, sources told the Daily News.

De Blasio's press secretary Freddi Goldstein denied the mayor had any meeting, discussion or deal with Adams or anyone else about a potential McCray run. Adams own representatives made a similar denial to the Daily News, but an insider said McCray would pursue Adam's base, "the moderate, mostly black, central Brooklyn vote."

The report comes on the heels of Councilman Rafael Espinal's withdrawal Thursday from the Brooklyn Borough presidency race, which whittled the contest to three declared candidates — City Council members Robert Cornegy and Antonio Reynoso, and activist Bishop Lamor Miller Whitehead.

McCray's potential entry into the race would be a return to Brooklyn for the de Blasio family. De Blasio famously drives to the Park Slope YMCA every day to work out and has a house in the neighborhood.
