One of the foundational institutions of society is marriage and the family. The family unit is the nucleus of a strong community and society. But what happens when that unit splinters? How are we to deal with a broken or questionable family unit? What role does the law play in solving these tricky questions?

These questions lie at the heart of so many unfortunate and sad family fights, quarrels and disputes. How do we determine whose child a baby is when there is a dispute? How do we decide who a child should live with when that is under dispute?

Does Judaism have anything to say about this?
