The SBBL has slowly been rolling out a new travel baseball program, with teams named the DUKES.
Presently, we have a 16U Freshmen team playing in a few leagues, and they have been doing very well.
This fall, we hope to roll out teams in the 8U, 10U, and 12U divisions, playing in the New York Travel Baseball (NYTB) league, one of the best-run leagues in the city. They play out at Ft. Tilden, near Breezy Point, on a 5-field complex on what used to be a U.S. Army base, right next to the ocean. The complex has a lunch concession, and the area surrounding the fields is great for biking, hiking, beach combing, picnicking, and so on. So when your kids play, you can make a family day of it.
The first round of tryouts for these fall teams will be held on Saturday, August 4:
- 1:00-3:00 pm - both the 10U and 12U teams
- 3:00-5:00 pm - the 8U team
There will be a second round the following weekend at times still to be determined.
Remember that in baseball your player's age is determined as of April 30, so, for example, if your player was 10 in the spring league but turns 11 this summer, technically he/she is still a baseball 10 and could play in the 10U division if wanted. Of course, he/she can also opt to play in the 12U division.
The fall season is played mid-September to the end of October. They play on six weekends, playing a double-header each weekend for a total of 12 games. So it's a brief but condensed season. And if your player loves baseball, they will enjoy playing in the fall. The weather is usually beautiful, the area is great, and the teams are a notch or two up from the competition in Prospect Park, so it can be satisfying to play amongst other good players.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
If you are interested but will be away on either the 4th or the 11th, please let me know as well.
And finally, if you know kids who may play for other organizations in the spring who may be interested in joining us this fall, please let them know about this opportunity.
Thank you.
Steve
