ABOUT THE COMPANY: Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance has been making work in NYC since 1997 and has grown into a critically acclaimed dance company with a distinctive approach to performance and presentation. Through the company’s long history of presenting work, the Village Voice has called Hummel “...enormously sophisticated. The choreography quivers with subtle emotions, like the writing to Virginia Woolf, to stage pictures that remain beautifully calibrated whether the figures are still or running amok.” The New York Times has called the performers “uncommonly committed in choreography as vivid and true as a Eudora Welty story. Ms. Hummel is quite a storyteller. You can hear the quiet tearing of a heart that might be your own.” The company works to bring articulate choreography to both formal stages as well as places where dance is not commonly accessed. Shannon, from her childhood in an underserved community in Appalachian Virginia, has long been committed to bringing her choreography to places that may not have access to live performances. Shannon works to relate to people who don’t have access to the arts (whether that is because of income, location or other isolating factors), with dialogue that is approachable and relatable. She is interested in putting sophisticated dance experiences in places where people normally lack access as well as creating larger, more expansive works for formal stages. Upcoming performances of the company include a 2015 season of performances at BAM Fisher, presented as part of the BAM/Devos Institute of Arts Management Professional Development Program.
Cora is located at 201 Richards Street, Buzzer 15 in the Red Hook Studios Building in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
