Brooklyn Bar Smell Recreated In Scented Candle

What does Brooklyn smell like? A night sipping cocktails at a bar in Carroll Gardens, according to this Park Sloper-owned candle company.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Every New Yorker knows that the city's boroughs — and its bars — are home to a lot of smells, both good and bad. But at least one of the city's bars had a smell enticing enough that it has been turned into a candle.

Brooklyn Candle Studio, based in Industry City and owned by Tamara Mayne of Park Slope, has added a custom "Brooklyn" scent to its Escapist collection, a line of candles inspired by different destinations.

And in an interview with The Knockturnal, Mayne said the new musky scent is meant to capture the feeling of sipping cocktails with friends at one of the borough's bars — specifically, a night she spent at Carroll Gardens' Clover Club.

"It was October, so fall was in full swing," Mayne said. "The cocktails we had (had) spicy and citrus notes, and we were all nestled in this leather booth. The fragrance was inspired by these notes, and the final product is a spicy, leathery, earthy fragrance with citrusy top notes.”

Mayne said she knew the scent could be anything, since everyone's interpretations of Brooklyn are based on their own experience, but that she wanted to dedicate it to the "amazing and creative food and cocktails" the borough offers and her memories of sharing these with her husband and friends.

The scent includes patchouli and wild sage at the forefront, with layers of orange blossom, neroli, leather and cassis, Knockturnal writes.

It was only a matter of time before we created a candle just for our favorite destination of all—our home of Brooklyn. It joins scents dedicated to more far-off places in the collection that Mayne has traveled to, such candles inspired by Santorini, Santa Fe or Italy.

"It was only a matter of time before we created a candle just for our favorite destination of all—our home of Brooklyn," the website says.

Mayne told Knockturnal that some of her favorite spots in Brooklyn are the Nitehawk Theater, both in Williamsburg and the newer outpost in Park Slope, Prospect Park, a handfuls of bars and restaurants including Union Hall and, of course, the Clover Club that inspired the scent.

The former art director in the fashion industry started the candle company in 2013. She had been making candles as gifts for family with a candlemaking kit the year before, according to the studio's website.

The candles are handcrafted with a blend of soy wax, essential oils, and phthalate-free perfume oils. The Brooklyn candle officially launches next month, but can be found on the studio's website.

“I felt like creating a Brooklyn candle as an homage to this place I love so much, where I have spent so many years, where I fell in love with my husband, where the company started and where our entire team lives made a lot of sense,” Mayne said. “I think it will be a hit, especially in this borough!”
