GOWANUS, BROOKLYN — An "Old" building is the new home for the Gowanus Canal Conservancy.

The Conservancy will use the Old American Can Factory — a six-building former industrial complex turned arts center — as its headquarters, according to a release.

Andrea Parker, the Conservancy's executive director, said in a statement that they're thrilled to join an "important landmark" for Gowanus.

“In our new space with floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor, we have a direct connection to the public and have more opportunities to get the word out about the importance of sustainability and resiliency in our low-lying neighborhood," she said. "The strength and character of Gowanus lies its history of productive urban ecology, from oysters to tide mills to industry."

Conservancy workers plan to use half of a 1,500-square-foot ground floor to use as office space for eight full-time staff, as well as seasonal gardeners, apprentices and educators, the release states. The other half will host events and meetings designed to engage the community.

The Old American Can Factory was built in the late 1800s to make — true to its name — tin cans. It has since turned into an artist studio space with 300 tenants, the release states.
