Park Slope Getting New 'Bike Corral' On Fifth Avenue

Park Slope bikers will have a place to park their bikes while enjoying some gelato.

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Park Slope bikers will soon have a new place to park their rides and snack on some gelato.

A "bike corral," with four racks for eight bikes, will be installed at 341 5th Ave., between 4th and 5th streets and across from M.S. 51. Community Board 6 approved the structure at its general board meeting Wednesday night.

The coral is outside of L'Alberodeigelati, which sells gelato, pastries, breads and wine, among other things.

"The owner of L'Alberodeigelati came to us in September with the DOT to propose the bike corral there," Eric McClure, co-chair of CB6's transportation committee, told Patch. "Monia (the owner) had requested it because she feels it would be beneficial to her customer base to have more bike parking."

The coral will be a permanent structure and take the place of one space of metered parking. It will be a permanent structure but could be removed if needed, McClure said.

"It’s really important," McClure said. "There are more and more people riding bikes in NYC, and having a place to lock up is key. And it’s illegal — and not a good idea — to lock up to trees."
