Park Slope School To Host Assembly To Save Speed Cameras

Safe streets group Transportation Alternatives is holding the event at Park Slope's Middle School 51.

PARK SLOPE, NY — A Park Slope middle school that has endured the tragedy of students being killed by reckless and speeding drivers will host an assembly Wednesday to save New York State's speed camera legislation.

The safe streets advocacy group Transportation Alternatives will gather people from all over New York City who are interested in preserving speed cameras in the state's school zones. Members of the group will attend the ceremony and let people know the best ways they can fight to save the program.

"If you’ve been fighting alongside Families for Safe Streets these past few months, this is your moment to take a breath and regroup. If you’ve been waiting to get involved, this is your time to find your place," Transportation Alternatives wrote on its website.

The New York State Senate failed to pass a bill in June that would renewing the authorization for the speed camera program. The legislative session has ended, but advocates and lawmakers have put pressure on the State Senate to renew the program during a special legislative session.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered the State Senate to pass a bill that would both double the number of cameras and renew the current program before its July 25 expiration. If the State Senate passes the bill, cameras will be installed in each of the city's 290 school zones by the end of July 2022.
