These Are Brooklyn's Filthiest Subway Stations

Avoid if at all possible.

The amazing data team over at WNYC just posted an interactive map of all New York’s dirtiest subway stations, based on stats from a recent Comptroller’s report.

The top honor — with zero cleanings last year — goes to the 138th Street station in the Bronx.

But quite a few more stations tied for second place, all with exactly one cleaning from July 2013 to July 2014. (The MTA’s goal, by comparison, is to clean each station once every three weeks.)

Here are all the once-cleaned stations in Brooklyn. Condolences to all whose commute makes the list.

  • Carroll Street station (F, G) (Carroll and Smith Streets in Carroll Gardens)
  • Court Street–Borough Hall station (N, R) (intersection of Court, Joralemon and Montague Streets in Downtown Brooklyn)
  • Franklin Avenue–Fulton Street station (A, C) (Franklin Avenue and Fulton Street in Bed-Stuy)
  • Montrose Avenue station (L) (Montrose and Bushwick Avenues in East Williamsburg)
  • Morgan Avenue station (L) (Morgan Avenue and Harrison Place in East Williamsburg)
  • Nassau Avenue station (G) (Manhattan and Nassau Avenues in Greenpoint)
  • Greenpoint Avenue station (G) (Greenpoint and Manhattan Avenues in Greenpoint)

If you dare, go fiddle with WNYC’s interactive map to discover your home station’s state of filth. Also to check out a group of Manhattan high-schoolers who‘ve invented a front-of-car vacuum they’re trying to pitch to MTA. Conclusion: Kids rule, municipal transit agencies drool.
