Tour Unveils Park Slope Armory's Hidden Civil War Shooting Range

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — An exclusive tour this month will let 20 lucky people explore a historic shooting range and secret museum that is hidden inside the Park Slope Armory.

Untapped Cities, which hosts behind-the-scenes tours throughout the five boroughs, will take on the Park Slope Armory on Sep. 17, revealing two "mythic locations" inside.

The tour will feature an abandoned underground shooting range that was once used during the Civil War and a Veterans Museum that the organization featured in its "Secret Brooklyn" book.

"You can explore these secret locations and meet Tom Miskel, a Park Slope resident and veteran of the Vietnam War who has been working on the multi-room museum, a space that is chock full of artifacts from the many wars fought by the United States," organizers said.

The shooting range, not normally open to the public, was once used by the 14th Regiment of the New York State militia, Untapped Cities said. The militia was nicknamed the "Red Legged Devils."

The tour group will see two of these shooting ranges and a Victorian-era waiting room where the soldiers would wait their turn to get inside.

The Armory tour, like all Untapped Cities' tours, is free for the company's "insiders." It will be available to the first 20 members who sign up. Registration opened for the sign-ups on Tuesday.
