The Hope Diamond presentation at the DAR meeting

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Colonel Josiah Smith Chapter of Patchogue met at St. John's Lutheran in Holbrook on Saturday March 10th. Mary Dykman, Vice Regent and former docent at the Smithsonian Institute, shared information about the Hope Diamond. It was once known as the French Blue, until it was sold to the Hope family banking group. This is the group that funded the Louisiana Purchase by the United States government. It was called the French Blue because of the violet color in the diamond. This diamond was cut a few times. Once another diamond was found and was believed to be one of the cut pieces of The Hope Diamond. An electron microscope was needed, and since this special microscope was at Brookhaven Lab on Long Island, the possible piece of The Hope Diamond and The actual Hope Diamond were brought to Brookhaven Lab. It was transported on someone's jacket pocket on our own Long Island Railroad! No one else knew about this- and it turns out to be the safest way to transport such a precious stone! Examination proved the new find to be taken from the same mine, but not to be a piece of The Hope Diamond.
