Mom Who Drove Drunk Crashes SUV With Her 2 Kids Inside Into Woods In Brookhaven: Police

The three were taken to NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk in East Patchogue, Suffolk police say.

BROOKHAVEN, NY — A Medford woman have been arrested under Leandra's Law after she was caught driving drunk with her two young children inside her car in Brookhaven on Saturday night, Suffolk police said.

Jesher Rivera-Barreto was driving a 2006 Toyota Forerunner southbound on Horseblock Road at the intersection on Montauk Highway when she lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, and crashed into the woods at around 11:25 p.m., according to police.

Rivera-Barreto and her two children, aged one and four years old, were taken to NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk in East Patchogue for evaluation, according to police.

Rivera-Barreto and the one-year-old were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said, adding that the four-year-old was not hurt.

Both children were released to their father at the hospital, according to police.

Rivera-Barreto, 31, was charged with aggravated driving while
intoxicated with a child passenger less than 15 years old, which is under Leandra's Law, driving while intoxicated, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

She is being held overnight at the 4th Precinct in Smithtown and was set to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.

Her court information was not available Monday morning.

Leandra's Law is named for 11-year-old Leandra Rosado, who was the passenger in a car driven by a drunk driver, and died as the result of her injuries.
