Patchogue Launches Ride Share Initiative, Reserving 4 Spaces Along Main Street

PATCHOGUE, NY — Patchogue Village is launching a new downtown curb-management initiative by designating and reserving four spaces along Main Street for ride-share pick-up and drop-off activity, officials said.

The spaces will be marked with signage and/or pavement markings to make their purpose clear, according to offcials.

The village intends to coordinate the designated locations with ride-share platforms where possible so that users can be directed toward the preferred pick-up and drop-off areas, officials said.

This initiative is part of the village's broader effort to manage downtown parking, traffic, pedestrian safety, and curb activity in a coordinated way, according to officials.

The Village will monitor the new spaces after installation and may make adjustments based on observed conditions, enforcement needs, business feedback, and public safety considerations, officials said.

The goal is to provide clear, convenient, and safer locations for riders and drivers while reducing traffic conflicts caused by vehicles stopping in travel lanes, blocking curb areas, or loading near busy intersections and crosswalks, according to officials.

Deputy Planning and Zoning Coordinator August Ruckdeschel said that as ride-share use has become part of how people travel to and from downtown Patchogue, village officials want "to make sure that activity happens in a safer and more organized way."

"These designated spaces are a practical step to improve traffic flow, support downtown businesses, and make it easier for residents and visitors to enjoy Main Street," he added.

Trustee Steve Fuoco said officials are trying their best "to keep up with the times, and to keep Patchogue as one of the best and easiest communities to visit and to enjoy, and this project is one more example of that."

With a vibrant and robust downtown, ride-share services can play an important role in helping residents and visitors access Patchogue's restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment destinations, officials said.

By making ride-share pick-ups and drop-offs more predictable, officials expect the new designated spaces to help:

• Alleviate downtown parking pressures by reducing unnecessary circling and parking search traffic.
• Discourage drinking and driving by making safe transportation options easier to use.
• Encourage shared rides, reduce unnecessary vehicle miles traveled, and support more environmentally conscious travel choices.
• Reduce double-parking and unsafe mid-block stopping.
• Improve traffic circulation on Main Street during peak dining, entertainment, and nightlife hours.
• Improve pedestrian safety near crosswalks and busy storefronts.
• Support local restaurants, bars, theaters, and downtown businesses by making visits to Patchogue easier and more organized.
