The Assassin showing at The Plaza Cinema & Media Arts Center

"With and without allegory, to watch The Assassin is to be carried along in the river of life, in all its ecstasy and terror." — Ella Taylor

THE ASSASSIN is set during the mighty Tang Dynasty-period in Chinese history. Nie Yinniang returns to her family after several years in exile. The mission of her order is to eliminate the tyranny of the governors who avoid the authority of the emperor. Now she will have to choose between sacrificing the man she loves, or break definitively with the “Order of the Assassins”.

“Hou’s kinetic yet serene approach to martial arts is like watching a fast-moving river. It’s less about the plot and body count and more about contemplating a story rich in symbols and multiple meanings.” — Peter Howell, Toronto Star

Directed by Hsiao-Hsien Hou
