Bellport Man Charged With Animal Cruelty After Dog, 10, Found Wounded And Infested With Flies: SPCA

BELLPORT, NY — A Bellport resident has been charged with animal cruelty after an investigation into the neglect and abuse of a dog, Suffolk Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Chief Roy Gross said Wednesday.

The 50-year-old has been charged with one misdemeanor and one violation counts of animal cruelty under the state's Agriculture and Markets Law and four misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty under the county's code, according to Gross.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred in August, during which time investigators determined the man failed to provide adequate care for his 10-year-old male gray, mixed-breed dog, "Seven," Gross said. As a result of the neglect, Seven was found to be underweight, infested with flies, and exhibited open wounds to his ears and neck, according to Gross.

Seven is currently receiving the necessary medical treatment at a local animal shelter, Gross said.

Detectives issued the man a Field Appearance Ticket on Aug. 24, and he is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Sept. 11. It was not immediately known if he had representation.
